About Miskolc

Miskolc, the third most populous city in Hungary and the seat of Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County, is the economic, educational and scientific centre of Northern Hungary. Miskolc is a bustling, modern city and is known not only for its industrial activities but also for its cultural and historical attractions.

A cultural highlight of Miskolc is the National Theatre, the first stone theatre that presented Hungarian language performances. Today, the Theatre is a modern complex with five stages, and is a magnet for lovers of culture. It is also a venue for the newest and internationally best known event held in Miskolc, the Bartók International Opera Festival.

One of the main tourist attractions is the cave bath in nearby Miskolc-Tapolca, where many of the hotels are located. The cave bath is a unique creation in a natural cavern. The high concentration of minerals in the thermal water, the healing air in the cave, and recent financial investments have all contributed to creating a “complex of experience and healing”.

Another popular sight in Miskolc is the Diósgyõr Castle, or castle of queens. The castle has four towers and a splendid view of the surrounding mountains. The visitors of the castle may enjoy various cultural programs every summer and the weapon and armour exhibition, as well the waxwork collection, are open to the public all year.

Surrounding Miskolc are the heights of the Bükk Mountains, the swift creeks, the natural environment of Lillafüred and its fresh air - a dream destination for all tourists who like active recreation. The only man-made ice-climbing wall in Hungary lies in the Bükk Mountains. The skiing-wonderland at Bánkút has the longest ski-slopes in the country, and has snow for the longest length of time.
